AKRON METROPOLITAN HOUSING AUTHORITY - DOROTHY JACKSON TERRACE
TC Architects was part of the design-build team that updated both the interior and exterior of this affordable housing development. Our team modified the roof construction and added architectural and entrance elements to transform this complex from “dated-looking” to a more contemporary, residential look.
Adding covered entrances to the front of each apartment created well-lit, sheltered seating areas where residents can observe activity within the complex and interact with their neighbors. The private outdoor areas at the rear of each apartment are defined with architectural privacy walls.
All kitchens and baths were redesigned to improve function and accessibility, make better use of space, and assure compliance with current ANSI standards for handicapped design. All interior doorways were enlarged to 3’-6” to reduce wear and deterioration of the components.
The affordable housing complex now presents as a new, aesthetically appealing, market-rate residential development. The apartment interiors provide residents with more functional and visually appealing homes.
